You have undoubtedly heard about the rise of mining within Australia. More and more people are switching careers and becoming miners. Why? This is a lucrative industry and for many, a career change sees their bank balance soar.

There are some people who are earning in excess of $15,000 per year through mining endeavours. This is great news for those who want a career change and want to earn a great sum of money in the process. In Australia, the mining industry is booming. With this in mind, it is becoming much sought after sector within the economy. The wage average is higher than a lot of other industries within the country.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a degree or a college accreditation. You can become a miner with few qualifications. What is more, you can retrain. The mining industry is becoming a lucrative option for many.

Criteria and Specifications

It is important to realise that mining is a dangerous occupation. Large mining projects are undertaken throughout the region, but this is not without its perils. To be a miner, you need to be physically fit. You will also need to have a lot of gumption. To be a miner, you will have to work in physically and emotionally tough conditions. Many of the mines within Oz are in remote areas. This means that you will have to prepare yourself for a life away from your family.

As a miner, you need to be able to complete manual work. This job is tough and demanding. You also need to have a keen sense of safety and awareness. Without this, you and your colleagues could be in danger. Confined spaces are part of the role. If you suffer from claustrophobia, this is not a job for you. You will be in demanding conditions. Having a sense of calm will serve you well.


Any certifications and qualifications in engineering and building will be an advantage. A qualification is geology will ensure a foot in the door. If you have a trade of some description, this will also serve you well should you want to become a miner.

You cannot typically get a job as a miner without any basic qualifications. All employers will look for someone who has completed high school as a minimum. What is more, there is individual mine training schemes that you will have to complete in order to do the job. Government certifications and safety courses are paramount to becoming a miner in Oz. Some basic level of mine training is critical to the role. After all, this is a dangerous job to undertake and some training will be required to ensure the safety of those in this role.

Traineeships may be available to some. This means that you can train on the job and have your certifications paid for by your employer.
