12 Tips For Passing Your Driving Test First Time

Taking your driving test can be a nerve-wracking, terrifying experience. Everybody wants to pass the first time round but unfortunately, many young people don’t. With the tests becoming more difficult as the years go on, facing the exam unprepared could leave you disappointed. Follow these 12 steps to ensure that you’re ready to hit the road sooner rather than later.


  1. Study for your theory test. Many people hear rumours about how easy the written part of the driving test is and opt to wing it rather than preparing thoroughly. This could easily end in a surprise fail, so revise the material carefully for a few weeks ahead of time to make sure you have all of the rules of the road engrained in your mind.
  2. Find the right driving instructor. The instruction you receive while you learn to drive can make or break the end result. Make sure that the instructor you find is fully certified and can prove their qualifications before you get in the car for your first lesson. Some driving schools also employ trainee instructors- this isn’t necessarily a problem, but you should be aware of the level of training your instructor has before you make your choice.
  3. Practice makes perfect. The best possible way to prepare for your test is to drive as much as possible. Don’t leave all of your driving for your lessons- have a parent or other experienced driver sit in the front seat with you and practice riding around on a regular basis.
  4. Take an intensive driving course. Intensive driving courses can help people learn to drive in just a matter of days or weeks- they’ll also help you book your written and practical tests. These courses can also be useful for learners who have already had private lessons but want to build their confidence in the run-up to the test.
  5. Learn the lay of the land. Once you know what area your test will be taken in, drive around the roads in that area frequently so you get a sense of where you’re going.
  6. Build your confidence. Confidence is one of the most important characteristics that your examiner will be looking for. Those who are nervous behind the wheel often make basic mistakes, so drive frequently and try to get as comfortable as possible on the road before you book your test.
  7. Practice your manoeuvres. There are a few different manoeuvres that the examiner can choose from on the day of your test- make sure you know them all well and have practiced each one multiple times so that you’re prepared for whichever one comes up.
  8. Make sure that your car is ready. If you’re taking your driving test in your own car, it will need to be in a good condition and deemed roadworthy. Make sure that the cars are inflated, there are no cracks in any of the glass and that your seat is in the correct position so that you don’t have to make adjustments on the day.
  9. Get a good night’s sleep. Being well rested can make a huge difference when it comes to passing your test. Even if you feel nervous and wired, try to get into bed as early as possible so that you’ve had at least eight hours of sleep.
  10. Eat a decent breakfast. A rumbling stomach will distract you while you drive, so eat a solid, well balanced meal on the morning before your test.
  11. Relax as much as possible. Being anxious and worried could work against you, so try to wind down in the hours leading up to your test and relax as much as you can. Breathing exercises, meditation and exercise can all go a long way in bringing your anxiety levels down.
  12. Don’t take risks. Your driving test is not the time to show off. Drive exactly as your instructor has taught you and avoid taking any risks at all- small mistakes could lead to an unexpected fail, so drive carefully and responsibly at all times.
